During a shootout, parts of the city of 270,000 in the US state of New Jersey looked like a war zone.
Six people were killed in a wild shooting near New York. According to police, the more than two-hour shooting began Tuesday in a Jersey City cemetery and later continued in an adjacent residential area. Among the dead were a police officer and two suspects who appeared to have started the shooting, said local police chief Michael Kelly.
Two other police officers were injured, he said. The background to the incident was initially unclear. US media reported that the killed police officer had investigated a murder case and approached the two suspects in the cemetery, whereupon they opened fire.
The two suspects then fled to a grocery store where the shooting continued. The bodies of the two refugees and three other people were later found in the store, Kelly said at a press conference. According to the media, it was a kosher supermarket. According to information from NBC television, hundreds of shots were fired in the incident. The late police officer was the father of five children, the police said.
During the shooting, parts of the city of 270,000 in the US state of New Jersey looked like a war zone. Hundreds of police officers were out in the streets, many of them heavily armed. Dozens of rescue vehicles also drove into the area, as an AFP photographer observed. Schools and hospitals in the area have been temporarily cordoned off.
