China Operates First Homemade Nuclear Reactor

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

China officially operates the reactor nuclear his first locale, Hualong One. This is China’s step to reduce dependence on energy and technology from Western allies.

According to a report by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) on Friday (27/11), the reactor is connected to the national grid and produces 10 billion KWh of electricity annually and reduces carbon emissions by 8.16 million tons.

“This marks China breaking the monopoly of foreign nuclear power technology and officially entering the first wave of technology in developed countries,” CNNC said in a statement. AFP.

Work on Hualong One began in 2015. At present there are six other reactors being built at home and abroad.

One of the reactors stationed at a plant in eastern China’s Fujian Province will be used commercially by the end of the year.

According to the National Energy Administration, in 2019 nuclear plants supplied less than 5 percent of China’s annual electricity needs. But going forward it looks like this will get bigger as China attempts to be carbon free by 2060.

Meanwhile, there is a ‘Made in China 2025’ plan realized by reducing the dependence on the high-tech sector on Western allies.

This process was accelerated by providing subsidies to Chinese companies.

Currently China has 47 nuclear plants with a capacity of 48.75 million KWh. This is the third largest capacity after the United States and France.

China is struggling to ‘wean’ the use of coal. 13 nuclear plants were built despite environmental and safety concerns.

In August 2016, officials were forced to put aside a plan to build a nuclear waste facility in Lianyungang, eastern Jiangsu Province after public protests.
