Belgian insurers have to reduce road accidents …

Belgian insurers registered 331,516 road accidents last year, or an average of 908 per day. That is a total of about 50,000 fewer than in 2010.

This is evident from the annual barometer of umbrella organization Assuralia about which the newspapers of Sudpresse Saturday messages. The statistics include serious accidents as well as minor collisions without physical damage. Assuralia’s data may slightly underestimate reality as some accidents are settled amicably, said spokesman Wauthier Robyns.

The total number of accidents has been decreasing since 2010, when 380,000 were registered. Nevertheless, the private vehicle fleet in Belgium has increased further over the past decade, from 5.2 to 5.8 million vehicles.

In 31 percent of the cases, a vehicle collided with a stationary or parked vehicle. A quarter of the accidents are rear-end collisions and 19 percent were caused by a vehicle that was maneuvering.
