“Possibly still in quarantine after vaccination”

Virologist Steven Van Gucht believes it is possible that people who are vaccinated against the corona virus should still be quarantined. He said this on Friday at the press conference of the National Crisis Center and health institute Sciensano.

“We don’t know yet whether the vaccine will protect against infection,” he said. According to the virologist, there is currently too little data available to make statements with certainty about the consequences of the vaccine. “We know of a number of vaccines that they protect 60 to 90 percent against the virus, but vaccinees may still be carriers of the virus, but they do not develop symptoms,” said Van Gucht. “As long as this is not clear, we must assume that people will still be quarantined after vaccination, especially if there has been contact with people who have an increased risk of complications.”

Van Gucht emphasizes that the number of quarantines will decrease as the vaccine becomes more accessible. “If more people are vaccinated, people will have to be in isolation less because the virus naturally circulates less. But for the time being we still have insufficient data.”
