Poland and Hungary reiterated on Friday that they will veto the European budget and the associated corona recovery fund if it remains tied to agreements on maintaining the rule of law. As a result, tensions between EU member states only seem to increase. The combination with agreements about protecting the rule of law is sacred to countries such as the Netherlands.
Earlier this month, Hungary and Poland already voted against the European budget of 1.8 trillion euros. That amount also includes the corona repair fund of 750 billion euros.
Both countries receive support from this fund, but there are rules for respecting the free press and the rule of law. It is precisely in these areas that the European Commission has launched an investigation into Poland and Hungary.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on his Facebook page on Friday, after a conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, that he is ready to block approval of the budget again. “If we are not able to find a solution that is good for the EU as a whole, rather than for some of its Member States.”
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said earlier that the position of his country has not changed. He added that he did not intend to compromise on the rule of law.
