From riots on Thursday night came as no surprise to the police. Earlier in the day, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office announced that the investigating judge asked for a non-prosecution for the officers who killed 19-year-old Adil C. earlier this year on his scooter. According to all the elements in the file, the agents would not be at fault. As expected, the outcome of the file caused quite a stir in Anderlecht.
It stayed amazingly quiet until 8 pm. Then about forty young people gathered at the Raadsplein near the town hall. Stones and even incendiary bombs were thrown towards the town hall. Two cars and a scooter were set on fire. The police arrived en masse, including with a water cannon and the support of the federal police and the police helicopter. In the end, twenty people were arrested administratively. They spent the night in the cell. “Calm returned around 10:30”, says Laziza Sadik of the Brussels-South police zone. “At eleven the whole square was empty again.”
The police remain extra vigilant because an appeal was spread on social media to meet again at the town hall this afternoon.
