Manska’s latest film “Gorbachev. Paradise ”tells the story of a man whose changes changed the world. As explained in the film’s description, Gorbachev was an architect of “openness” (Glasnost) and “reconstruction” (Perestroika). Demolition of the Berlin Wall. But also the silencer of the Chernobyl accident, the oppressor of the protesters in Tbilisi and Baku. The Soviet empire collapsed during his reign and his own people now condemn him for it. With the burden of past events on his shoulders, the lonely man spends his days in an empty suburban house in Moscow. ”
Director Vitaly Manski said of his film: “Mikhail Gorbachev will have monuments all over the world. Somewhere very soon, somewhere – in Russia, for example – it will be many years before there is a sense of what this man has done for history. But I wanted to see behind the coolness of bronze or marble a man who alone decided to make the world a better place. It is with this motivation that we have long persuaded the tired 90-year-old to let us into his world of loneliness, frustration and the happiness of freedom! ”
