Nisha Parikh, a UCLA cardiologist and M.D., said that people who have undergone the coronavirus may experience inflammation or scarring of the heart muscle.
According to Medicalxpress, with coronavirus, both young people and middle-aged and elderly people have heart problems. In the initial stages, infection causes problems with efficient pumping of blood, as well as inflammation of the pericardium or heart muscle.
“One important thing found in COVID-19 patients is inflammation or scarring of the heart muscle,” Parikh explained.
Patients also have a higher incidence of a condition called takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Such dysfunction can appear due to severe stress caused by the loss of loved ones, social isolation, or the COVID itself. At the same time, long-term negative effects appear after recovery.
According to the doctor, patients complain of chest pains and palpitations to light-headedness or fainting. Long-term patients with coronavirus feel numbness, dizziness and headaches.
The specialist emphasized that the coronavirus directly affects the mucous membrane of blood vessels (endothelium), and this increases the risk of blood clots in the lungs and lower extremities.
