What You Need To Know Before Taking Supplements

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

In the middle pandemic, the more people who care will health. Consumption supplement so one way that is done to improve body endurance.

Internal medicine expert Mauricio Gonzalez explains, supplements are an addition to your daily diet. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act defines supplements as products containing one or more dietary nutrients.

In other words, the various definitions above refer to supplements as a way to improve fitness.

However, you cannot just buy and take supplements. There are several things you need to know before using supplements.

1. Supplements are needed when the body is deficient in micronutrients

Supplements should be taken when you do not meet the micronutrient adequacy level. The reason is, not every day micronutrient needs are met. Apart from limited access to healthy food, some people limit their consumption of certain foods or intolerance to gluten and dairy products.

Nicole Avena, assistant professor at Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, says that fast food consumption is the reason why many people are deficient in micronutrients.

“When you eat a lot of processed food or don’t get a lot of vegetables, fruit and protein in your diet, you need supplements,” Avena said, citing Eat This.

However, if you feel the diet is good and varied, supplements can be consumed in small amounts. According to Avena, there are changes in nutrients in plants due to changes in soil. Vegetables or fruits that are consumed now, he said, do not have as many nutrients as fruits and vegetables a few years ago.

2. Too many supplements are not good

The key is moderation, including the consumption of supplements.

To date, there is no amount or limit on taking supplements. However, Neerav Dilip Padliya, vice president of research for MYOS RENS Technology, thinks it’s a good idea to consult with your doctor to determine the right amount or dose of the supplement.

Padliya said, the only supplement that should be limited is energy drinks. “Usually these drinks are high in caffeine and taurine which do not come from plants. If you take too many supplements and drink too many energy drinks, you can enter the emergency room with heart problems,” explained Padliya.

3. Not a multivitamin, choose a specific one

The need for supplements for children and adults is clearly different. Adults can no longer rely on multivitamins like children. It’s time to take specific supplements.

Nutritionist Jonny Bowden says there aren’t many high-quality vitamins in one pill. “You can’t get everything you need in one little pill. Some high-quality multivitamins have a recommended serving of 6 tablets per day,” he says.

4. Supplements do not come out with urine

Some people think the benefits of supplements will come out with urine. Naturopathy, Katy Firisin said, sometimes there are supplements that make urine more yellow and smell. However, this does not mean that all the nutrients are just gone.

Instead, each nutrient has a specific dosage for optimal health. This means that there is a certain level of dosage that can be followed to achieve certain goals. “Knowing the purpose of consuming supplements is the most important,” he concluded.
