He has been considering resigning for a long time, more than a year. But the deadlines were still shifting. For example, a pandemic also had an effect.

“It would not be responsible to resign at the peak of the epidemic and state of emergency,” Kořen told Právo.

Dispute over apartments
The main reason for his decision was the dispute over apartments in Říčany. Because of him, he also got into a conflict with some members of his own movement. It is a transfer of thirty flats for a hundred crowns to the ownership of its existing tenants.

Mayor Kořen opposed the transfer, although the court ordered in a first-instance decision to transfer the apartments, and most councilors decided not to appeal to the city. The root was against this decision. These are apartments on Comenius Square.

About twenty years ago, when their construction began, a contract was signed, on the basis of which part of the money and land was given by the city, part by hundreds of thousands of money was given by tenants, and part was covered by state subsidies. For twenty years, the apartments had to remain rented. Now people want them for a hundred crowns.

“But they got their money back in the form of a discount on rent, which they paid significantly lower, and they made their deposit,” says the outgoing mayor Kořen.

He does not want to wait to see that as the mayor he will face lawsuits for improper management of the city’s property. For a hundred crowns, people will now acquire property worth a total of 84 million crowns.

“I respect the decision of the deputies, I do not take it as a betrayal, but as a democracy. At the same time, I must accept political responsibility and also respond to the change in political forces on a key issue, “added Kořen, according to whom there is great legal uncertainty in this case.

According to him, another reason for leaving is also fatigue from the cycle in the city management. “Ten years of full performance will consume a large part of life energy,” Kořen admitted. He does not yet know how his future will develop.
