Tarragona reduces the taxi fleet by 80% due to the coronavirus

Tarragona reduces the taxi fleet by 80% due to the coronavirus

Due to confinement and lack of activity, public taxi transport has fallen by up to 90% in Tarragona.

For this reason, the taxi sector and the City Council of the capital have reached an agreement to temporarily reduce the taxi fleet by 80%.

The fleet of 93 taxis has been reduced to 20

“It is clear that while the alarm lasts we will continue like this and, when it begins to cheer up, it will be requested to extend the service, but right now the demand is covered”, argues the president of the Tarragona Radio Taxi Group, David Navarro.

The minimum services are guaranteed and, right now, these include covering trips to hospitals, medical centers and the courts.

The group has also had to take important protective measures in order to continue operating safely.

Only one person can travel in the taxi, who must sit in the back of the vehicle, except when traveling a minor or another person who needs assistance.

Application for aid

In order to apply for government assistance for cessation of activity, it is necessary to demonstrate a loss of at least 75% and the taxi sector is classified as an essential service.

In this way, taxi drivers will also be able to benefit from these aids as the reduction of the fleet is regulated.

In this context, most taxi drivers are taxed by the module system and therefore are not obliged to issue invoices, so they can hardly justify a drop in their income of more than 75%.

With the minimum service that remains, 20% 24 hours a day, it is enough for the demand that exists right now and taxi drivers can justify the drop in income by 75%.
