Pope: Opponents of masks are trapped in their own little world | NOW

In a new book, Pope Francis has ridiculed those who demonstrate against corona measures. “It is impossible for them to leave their small world with interests of their own,” he quoted The Guardian Monday evening.

In the book Let Us Dream: The Path to a Better Future talks between the Pope and his biographer Austen Ivereigh are highlighted. Large parts of the book focus on themes surrounding the corona pandemic.

According to Pope Francis, a state’s decision to force the population to wear a face mask is indeed justified.

The Pope claims that those who take action against corona measures would never take to the streets to draw attention to the death of George Floyd or disadvantaged neighborhoods where children have no access to education or clean drinking water. “That would be impossible for them, because it is outside their bubble,” said the clergyman.

Almost all governments are currently putting public health first, the Pope says. Still, he says, there are “large groups who interpret well-intentioned measures taken as a political attack on their autonomy or personal freedom,” quotes The Guardian.

‘Some countries put the economy above public health’

In certain countries, large demonstrations against corona policy are justified, according to the Pope. “Some governments have put their economies above public health. These governments have pawned their people,” said the Pope.

The attention for the death of Floyd, a black American who was killed during his arrest, can count on the support of the clergyman. The Pope condemns his “terrible death”. “I commend the many people who took to the streets together with strangers motivated by healthy indignation.”

The Pope does criticize the taking down of statues. As a result of the protests, parts of history are being “chopped away”, while a free population should be able to rethink the mistakes and learn from them, Francis concludes.
