New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg announced her resignation on Monday, nearly seven years after Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed her to the position.
The mayor’s office said in a press release that Trottenberg’s resignation will take effect in early December.
Trottenberg has served in the role since 2014, making her the longest-serving commissioner in the agency’s history and one of the longest-serving commissioners in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration.
“I will always be grateful to Mayor de Blasio for the incredible opportunity to serve the city that I love so much, and especially for the opportunity to lead the 5,800 dedicated public servants that make up DOT,” Trottenberg said in a statement.
“I have been honored to work with them and to see the passion, creativity and dedication they bring to the service of New Yorkers every day, especially during the pandemic of the past eight months. For now, I just thank everyone, ”he added.
Trottenberg spearheaded efforts to expand streets more sustainably, including bike and bus lanes, particularly in underserved communities.
“We all owe Polly Trottenberg gratitude for her incredible service to New York City,” said Mayor De Blasio.
“She is a tireless and talented public servant who has made our city safer, fairer and more accessible. I’m proud to have worked so closely with her, and I wish her all the best in what comes next. “
As DOT commissioner, Trottenberg also spearheaded the De Blasio administration’s efforts around transportation issues, the Vision Zero program, the mayor’s flagship program,
Riders Alliance CEO Betsy Plum praised Trottenberg for her work:
“New Yorkers owe Polly Trottenberg sincere gratitude. During his tenure, the Department of Transportation implemented more bus lanes, security cameras and other improvements throughout the city, ”he said.
“While representing New York City on the MTA board, Commissioner Trottenberg was also a strong, independent voice for millions of transit users. New York is a safer and fairer city today thanks to their sustained efforts, ”he added.
Trottenberg did not reveal the details of her new job, but it has been made public that she could assist in the Biden-Harris transition and serve as an advisor on transportation issues.
