Bad circumstances for a newborn in the first few months of life. In a small apartment in the Main-Spessart district, the sometimes overwhelmed young mother and her pot-smoking friend lived lovingly and arguing – the toddler as a perceived disturbance right in the middle. Once the baby should have screamed for four days in a row. On another occasion, the “surrogate father” is said to have forced his jaw on him by force and stuffed the porridge into his mouth. This is how the 21-year-old mother described it in the witness stand in front of the Wrzburg regional court on Monday.
Shortly before Christmas 2019, the baby is said to have annoyed the mother’s 24-year-old friend with his screaming so much while watching TV that he – according to the prosecution – killed it violently. The defendant himself denies a murder by asphyxiation.
The young mother’s testimony was eagerly awaited during the trial. On Monday she described a difficult childhood. At times she was in the drug milieu at Wrzburg Central Station, but she did not provide any information about her own consumption. “A baby is not born with guidance, I didn’t know what was wrong and right,” said the 21-year-old about her difficulties in finding her way as a mother without neglecting her lover.
During 21 visits by the youth welfare office, “ideal world played out”
The youth welfare office had repeatedly heard from the environment about problems in dealing with the baby. Employees checked the young couple 21 times. The mother admitted in court that they had been shown a piece of an ideal world. The presiding judge Claus Barthel put it more clearly: “You’ve been kidding the youth welfare office in good German.”
The 21-year-old spoke openly in court about the difficulties of developing a close relationship with him after the birth of the child and at the same time meeting the demands of her boyfriend. She described how the 24-year-old was quick-tempered and spirited in making decisions about the small family. He is said to have often started the day with a joint and then spent gambling on the computer. However, despite his threats and serious assaults, she was afraid that he would leave her and always give in.
He threatened her: In the event of a separation, he would let the police take the boy away from her. According to the young mother’s testimony, the defendant was said to have been rough with the baby. He largely left the care and feeding of the child to her. When asked by defense attorney Hanjo Schrepfer, however, she said that he did not only look after the screaming child on the day of death, but before.
Witness does not want to testify before the accused
The 21-year-old had already shown in advance that she was uncomfortable with the testimony as a witness. First, she asked the court to be interrogated by video from another room – allegedly out of fear of the ex-boyfriend. When the court insisted on appearing, she briefly stated on the day of the trial that she was suffering from symptoms of explanations. Your family doctor first had to rule out a corona infection. On Monday, the court now denied her request to send her ex-lover out of the courtroom while she was testifying.
Re-interrogation in court
What is behind the allegation that the 24-year-old defendant repeatedly abused mother and child for months? This Tuesday, when the mother is questioned again, details should come up: The defendant is said to have put the crying baby in a box and locked it in the closet. Out of anger or to protect her from her mother, who is also drugged? Chief Public Prosecutor Thorsten Seebach as well as defense attorney Hanjo Schrepfer and the court want to know.
