The reality, however, looks grimmer. While some 57 percent of the population is black or mixed, nearly 8 in 10 police brutality deaths are black or mixed. This is even more than 9 in 10 for minors.
The death of João Alberto Silveira Freitas due to excessive violence was filmed, but unfortunately it is by no means exceptional. “Blacks in Brazil suffer from inequality. Incidents like this happen every day,” Renato Mireilles, president of an institute investigating police violence, told AP news agency.
