To help identify nephropathy early, diabetics should be screened for kidney complications at least once a year. A screening test involves a simple urine sample that is tested to detect whether there is protein in the urine.

2. Nerve damage

Neuropathy (or diffuse neuropathy) is a neurological disorder that can be categorized as sensory neuropathy, motor neuropathy, or autonomic neuropathy.

Neuropathy can be caused by type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
