Recommendation: five nature areas can become National Landscape Park

Five Dutch nature areas can become a so-called National Landscape Park, advises the National Park Exploration Committee. These parks should not only pay attention to the special nature, but also to the cultural-historical heritage. Moreover, they are of international allure.

These are the Wadden area, the Biesbosch, the Dutch mainland dunes (from Den Helder to Hoek van Holland), the Veluwe and the IJsseldelta with Weerribben-Wieden.

The committee, headed by Pieter van Vollenhoven, was commissioned by the Forestry Commission and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands research into which areas qualified for this.

Experimental garden for biodiversity

According to the committee, the five parks should not only be there to provide insight into the natural and landscape history of the Netherlands, they also remain freely accessible to the public. In addition, they should serve as a testing ground to restore biodiversity and to investigate how social problems such as future-proof water management, nitrogen reduction and CO2 reduction can be tackled.
