If it’s stupid having a birthday during a global pandemic, imagine what it must be like to get married during this time. Nikolina Kovalenko and Stephan Ponova know how it is. Instead of celebrating with friends and family, they decided to have a very private ceremony on the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York – only the couple and an officer were present. The couple didn’t even hire a photographer to capture their wedding. And yet you will now have a nice souvenir of the romantic ceremony for the mantelpiece.
Because, unnoticed by Nikolina and Stephan, a young woman was also standing on the bridge and recording the moment with her cell phone in the sunset. She later shared one of the pictures on her Twitter channel and wrote: “If you got married on Brooklyn Bridge tonight, I have a few pictures for you.” In order to give her search action more reach, she also linked the presenters of a popular breakfast show.
A New York love story as beautiful as the wedding photo
The appeal spread like wildfire on the web and was shared over 10,000 times on Twitter alone. With success. The couple got in touch and revealed how their love story began. In an interview with “Good Morning America”, Nikolina and Stephan told how they met in Colombia last summer: “We danced salsa and we had such a great connection,” said Nikolina, “but the next morning I had to get a bus very early to the next town. I jokingly said that if he wanted to continue talking, he should come to the bus stop and continue traveling with me. When I got to the terminal at six in the morning, he was already there with his big backpack on the back.”
The engagement took place on June 26, 2020, about a month later the couple got married: “We knew our families and friends wouldn’t be able to celebrate with us, so we decided to keep the ceremony as private as possible – just for ourselves . ” By the way, they opted for the Brooklyn Bridge because of the symbolic power of a bridge. They told the broadcaster “New York 1”: “You step onto the bridge hand in hand on one side and then you cross it and you’re already married.”
