Belgium officially free of African swine fever: good news for pig farmers (and youth camps)

Restoring normal status is good news for pig farmers. They were faced with many restrictions on exports, including China imposing an embargo on imports.

The FASFC calls the European decision in this regard “a clear signal to third countries that had imposed an embargo on Belgian pork.” At a European level, it should facilitate the trade in Belgian pork again, thinks the FASFC. It is more difficult for countries outside Europe. This first requires a green light from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Only then could it be exported to China again.

Federal Minister of Agriculture David Clarinval (MR) welcomes the European decision. “The end is in sight and it allows us to guide the steps we need to take to lift the embargoes of several third countries as soon as possible,” he said in a communication.

Swine fever also prevented certain youth camps in Wallonia from continuing, a difficulty that added to the corona crisis this year. In that respect too, the European communication is good news.
