Victory in Leipzig: BVB is runner-up

Berlin. The Bundesliga is facing a relegation final on the last day of the game: Werder Bremen, who was penultimate in the table, lost 1: 3 (0: 2) at FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday, but Fortuna Düsseldorf did not have a draw against FC Augsburg (1 : 1) out. This means that Bremen (28 points) could still reach the relegation place with a win against 1. FC Köln next weekend and avoid the second relegation in the club’s history from the first division. Düsseldorf (30 points) then plays for 1. FC Union Berlin. Mainz, Augsburg and 1. FC Cologne are now definitely saved.

In the battle for the premier class, autumn champion RB Leipzig was defeated by runner-up Borussia Dortmund 0: 2 (0: 1), but with 63 points and a goal difference of +43, they are practically certain of qualifying for the Champions League. Bayer Leverkusen (60 / + 16) lost 0: 2 (0: 1) at Hertha BSC and slipped to fifth. Borussia Mönchengladbach (62 / + 25) is fourth after the 3: 1 (1: 0) at the relegated SC Paderborn.

Bayern gave SC Freiburg no chance and won 3-1 (3-1). The Schalke crisis continued in the 1: 4 (0: 2) against VfL Wolfsburg. Like Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim secured their participation in the Europa League in 1899 with a 4-0 (3-0) win against Union Berlin. Cologne and Eintracht Frankfurt parted 1: 1 (1: 0).

Four days after the first decisions of this Corona season with the crowning of the championship of FC Bayern Munich and the relegation of SC Paderborn, the penultimate matchday was mainly dominated by the fight for relegation. In the relegation summit in Mainz, Robin Quaison (25th) and Jean-Paul Boetius (30th) shocked the guests from Bremen in the first half hour, who now have to win against Cologne and rely on the help of Union Berlin to at least get in to save the relegation against the table third in the 2nd division. Yuya Osako scored the next goal for Werder in the 58th minute, but Edimilson Fernandes (85th) made it 3-1.

The relegation battle competitor Düsseldorf had a turbulent initial phase. After six minutes, Fortuna seemed to have taken the lead, but Rouwen Hennings’ goal was not given after video evidence. Only 34 seconds after the game was resumed, it was the guests who scored 0-1 through Florian Niederlechner (10th). Henning’s second attempt counted (26th) – with his 15th goal of the season, the Düsseldorf captain equalized. A second Fortuna goal would have sealed Bremen’s relegation, but now Werder and Düsseldorf have to tremble on the last day of the game.

Timo Werner before the last home game

In Leipzig, international striker Timo Werner, who had switched to Chelsea, was bid farewell before his last home game – and replaced after 70 minutes. BVB young star Erling Haaland (30./90.+3) met twice. Dortmund’s rival Schalke, however, experienced another bitter afternoon. Wout Weghorst (16./56.), Kevin Mbabu (59.) and Joao Victor (70.) scored for Wolfsburg, Rabbi Matondo (71.) only managed to improve the result for Schalke.

In the Berlin Olympic Stadium, Matheus Cunha (22nd) and Dodi Lukebakio (54th) sealed the Leverkusen defeat. Hoffenheim secured participation in the Europa League thanks to goals from Ihlas Bebou (11th), Andrej Kramaric (39th), Munas Dabbur (45th + 2) and Christoph Baumgartner (68th). The Freiburg competitor had no chance at Bayern. Four days after the championship crowning victory in Bremen, Joshua Kimmich (16th) and Robert Lewandowski scored the well-deserved victory with goals number 32 and 33 (24/37). Lucas Höler scored 1: 2 (33rd) for Freiburg.
