New York State: injured after gunfire in crowd

In Syracuse, a city of 145,000 in the US state of New York, nine people were shot injured on Saturday evening. A 17-year-old was injured in the head and, according to the police, is in mortal danger. The other victims between the ages of 18 and 53 were not critically injured.

The background to the incident is still unclear. According to local police chief Kenton Buckner, there has been no arrest.

The police were called around 9 p.m. because of a stolen vehicle near a parking garage in downtown Syracuse. People were found there who reported that strangers shot into a crowd. The police said they had not heard any gunshots themselves, nor did they know the nature of the gathering on the street.

According to eyewitnesses, hundreds of people had gathered for a party at the crime scene. The internet portal syracuse.com reported that it was about the “Rye Day”, which takes place once a year, and a DJ plays. The party should have ended around 9 p.m.

Nothing is known about the identity of the victims, including whether they are related to each other. Now the investigation is underway.
