On Monday, the police in Pļaviņas have drawn up three administrative violation protocols for driving a bicycle under the influence of alcohol, imposing fines of 170 euros for each violation, Dace Kalniņa, a representative of the State Police Zemgale Region Board, informed LETA.
While performing his duties in Pļaviņas, the police inspector noticed a man who was riding a bicycle unconvincingly. On suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the man was stopped and examined for alcohol in the breath. The breathalyzer showed 2.65 per mille. According to the Road Traffic Law, it is prohibited to drive a vehicle if the blood alcohol concentration of the cyclist exceeds 0.5 per mille.
The ombudsman started an administrative violation process about the incident, as well as called on the man born in 1967 to continue his journey by walking and pushing a bicycle.
Initially, the man obeyed the police officer’s call, but shortly after the officer continued on the road, the police officer noticed that the same gentleman was still riding a bicycle. When the man was stopped for the second time, he refused to undergo an alcohol test, and within half an hour, the lawyer initiated a second administrative violation proceeding against him.
Ten minutes later, while riding a bicycle, the man was spotted by another patrolling Traffic Police crew. The man was stopped for the third time on suspicion of alcohol intoxication. During an alcohol test, he was found at 2.29 per mille, and a third administrative violation proceeding was initiated against the man.
A man is fined 34 fine units, equivalent to € 170, for refusing a medical examination to determine his alcoholic strength, but for both cases, where the gentleman performed an alcohol test and was found to have a blood alcohol level of more than two per mille, it is also appropriate. a fine of 34 fine units or 170 euros for each violation. Thus, in one minute, a man committed offenses in 40 minutes, which will cost him a total of 510 euros.
Police point out that driving under the influence of alcohol is an offense that affects not only cars but also cyclists. An intoxicated cyclist not only endangers his own life and health, but also poses a threat to other road users.
LETA has already reported that a similar event took place in Pļaviņas a week ago, when police officers stopped a cyclist twice in 45 minutes for driving under the influence. Police officers launched two administrative violation proceedings against a man born in 1991 for cycling under the influence of alcohol.
The police also found that the man lives in Latvia without a declared place of residence. A third administrative infringement procedure has been initiated against him for this violation.
