Travelers arriving in the Netherlands will soon be obliged to prove that they have been tested for the corona virus. This must also show that they are not affected by the virus. At least, that’s what Corona Minister Hugo de Jonge wants, but that requires an amendment to the law. As a result, the requirement of a negative test statement can only be introduced in the spring at the earliest, the minister expects.
The test statement must be issued no more than two days (48 hours) before arrival, the minister reports to the Lower House.
This should make it easier for people who travel to the Netherlands for a necessary journey from risk areas, where the virus is spreading quickly at that time or the number of infections is very high. In addition, De Jonge wants to have travelers from those areas tested five days after their arrival in the Netherlands. This is expected to happen even if they have no complaints that indicate the corona virus.
Although for most people the regulation will take a while, the test statement can be requested for a specific group of travelers from mid-December, says De Jonge. These are non-European travelers who are exempt from the entry ban of the European Union. With an amendment to that prohibition and the rules on free travel between certain European countries, an obligation can already be arranged for this group. From mid-January, they could be tested after five days of arrival.
In this way, people for whom it is ‘really necessary’ to travel (not for holidays or a family visit) do not have to be quarantined for as long after they have arrived in the Netherlands. By drawing up the rules, the cabinet hopes that this can be done without travelers from risk areas bringing the virus back with them.
