Dozens of companies are at fault with disinfectants

The inspectorates issued 82 warnings. One company was ordered to pay a penalty for including a banned chlorine substance in the hand gel. The product has been withdrawn from the market.

A proliferation of providers

After the outbreak of the coronavirus, a proliferation of manufacturers and suppliers of disinfectants, including hand gels and disinfectants for household and offices, arose.

Due to the high demand for disinfectants, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management decided to introduce a temporary exemption, which made it easier for companies to market disinfectants. Normally, these products must first be authorized by the Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb).

According to the ILT, companies jumped into the gap created by the high demand. For example, an ice cream factory and beer brewers started the production of disinfection gels.

Stopped

Of the 70 inspections carried out by the Human Environment Inspectorate (ILT), everything was in order at 12 inspections. Of the companies surveyed, 25 providers decided to immediately stop selling disinfectants.

The NVWA carried out 122 inspections at companies that traded in disinfectants. In addition, it was examined how cosmetic products were advertised as disinfectants. Those investigations resulted in 1,000 ads being taken offline because they didn’t comply with the rules.

Nebulization gates

Two supermarkets had to remove their disinfection gates from the ILT. Such gates are used to disinfect people through nebulization. This is prohibited in the Netherlands and the atomization contained substances that are dangerous to health.
