WELCOME BACK – The off-road vehicle Jeep Wrangler, along with the generations that preceded it, is a myth of American motoring. The V8 engine is not far behind, but these two icons had not met for almost forty years: the last to have an 8-cylinder was the 1981 Jeep CJ. However, Jeep has decided to revive this partnership and today announces there Wrangler Rubicon 392, series version of the prototype unveiled in July: it will arrive on the American market in the first quarter of 2021, but it is not expected to be imported into Italy.
ALSO GOES TO 4 – The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 mounts a naturally aspirated V8 with a displacement of 6.4 liters, equal to 392 cubic inches (hence the name 392): the power is 470 hp and the torque of 637 Nm. The V8 is the well-known Chrysler engine with the monobloc in cast iron, aluminum heads and two valves per cylinder, as tradition dictates, but it is equipped with Fuel Saver technology to deactivate four pistons in quiet driving, in order to reduce consumption. Given the important dimensions of the V8, the Jeep Wrangler 392 has the hood lid that is 4 cm higher.
CAN GO STRONG – The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is designed for the most demanding off-road, where it promises to be almost unstoppable, but it has the credentials not to disappoint even on asphalt, where it has announced performances worthy of a sports car: starting from a standing start, it takes 4.5 seconds to reach 96 km / h and 13 seconds to cover the distance of 400 meters. Furthermore, at the push of a button, or electrically, the 6.4 bypasses the system that silences it and goes from being relatively quiet, for everyday driving, to freeing its roar, emphasized by the four exhausts.
GP STYLE DEPARTURES – The engine matches the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and optimized for this version: it has steering wheel controls to change gear manually, as in sports cars (they are absent for other Wranglers equipped with the same transmission). In addition, it is equipped with the Torque Reserve function, which manages the flow of petrol into the cylinders, as well as the combustion of the air / fuel mixture, with a view to improving starting from standstill, which occurs with minimum wheel spin.
PER L’OFFROAD – When it hits the market, the Jeep Wrangler 392 will be offered in the setting only Rubicon, more devoted to off-road vehicles than the others. In fact, there are the 2 cm raised suspension, superior quality shock absorbers from the Fox specialist and thicker axles, as well as electronically controlled Selec-Trac permanent all-wheel drive, with reduced gears and specific driving modes for sand and rocks: the electronics manage the response of the accelerator, gearbox and traction control, in order to increase traction.
