British diplomat Stephen Ellison has achieved hero status in China after images of his rescue went viral. In the Chinese city of Chongqing, he rescued a student who had fallen into the water from drowning.

The student was pulled onto dry land with the help of bystanders and “quickly began to breathe again,” according to the Chinese Xinhua news agency. “Thanks to his quick response, she immediately regained consciousness.” The British embassy tweeted that they are “extremely proud” of Ellison.
