New York The US Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (30) can, according to initial forecasts, run again for election as a congressman in November. She won the New York state primary.

Ocasio-Cortez, who was elected to the US Congress in 2018 as the youngest woman to date, won the primary in her constituency in New York on Tuesday, as US media reported on Wednesday, citing initial forecasts.

She prevailed with around 70 percent of the vote against the former journalist Michelle Caruso-Cabrera. Since her constituency in the Bronx and Queens districts is predominantly democratic, her re-election in November is considered certain.

The immigrant daughter from the New York Bronx became known beyond the United States in 2018 because, completely surprisingly, she had defeated Joe Crowley, one of the most senior long-established Democrats, in the party primary. Ocasio-Cortez, who among other things worked as a waitress and activist and describes herself as a socialist, advocates free universities and a nationwide job guarantee with a minimum wage of 15 US dollars per hour.
