The victims were on a ventilator in the intensive care unit of the hospital in Piatra Neamt where the fire raged.
A short circuit in a device is believed to be the cause of the fire, says Nelu Tataru, the Romanian health minister.

Among the injured is a doctor who was still trying to save the patients from the flames. He suffered first and second degree burns on 80 percent of his body.
Like many other countries in Europe, Romania is facing a second wave of corona infections, while the first has been weathered quite well. The country has a poor health system and is in trouble due to a shortage of doctors.
