Demonstration in Amsterdam ended early due to corona rules violation | NOW

The municipality of Amsterdam prematurely ended a demonstration on the Museumplein of Women for Freedom on Saturday evening, after protesters did not comply with the applicable corona measures. A spokesman said that they did not keep their distance and “a speech and music caused unrest among those present.”

The demonstration had been reported to the municipality and was initially scheduled to last from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Agents sent home the approximately 1,000 people present at 6.20 pm in consultation.

According to the spokesman, a thousand demonstrators had been expected in advance. “Conditions were set in advance for the organization, which related to, among other things, compliance with the corona measures”, the spokesperson continues.

According to a spokesperson, the police and the organization have called several times to keep a distance of 1.5 meters, but those present hardly responded. In consultation, the demonstration would have ended more than half an hour earlier.

But according to the organization, the demonstration was not ended prematurely and it called on participants to go home after it. The protesters then dispersed in peace.

At the request of the organization behind the demonstration, attendees had taken lights with them en masse. Women for Freedom wanted to create, in their own words, “a point of light in these times”. “Finding your own role in these difficult days is quite a challenge. It takes courage, trust, compassion and integrity. This afternoon we want to reflect on this challenge,” the organization described the demonstration.

The organization writes on its own page to stand up for human rights and to be against the corona law. The demonstration that was aborted on Saturday evening does not seem to be against this.
