Former JFK Airport Driver Stole Luxury Goods Worth IDR 86 Billion from Airplane Cargo

NEW YORK CITY, KOMPAS.com – A total of two former truck drivers on Airport International John F Kennedy, New York, United States of America (USA), and four colleagues were charged with allegedly stealing branded goods valued at more than US $ 6 million (Rp.86 billion).

These luxury items include Chanel bags, Prada bags, and accessories like Gucci.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz and Airport Authority Police on Thursday (29/10/2020) revealed the identities of the two former drivers, namely David Lacarriere (33) and Gary McArthur (43).

Authorities said the two suspects used their experience from work at airport to falsify documents and haul shipments containing thousands of top-brand goods on two separate occasions earlier this year.

“Working closely with our law enforcement partners, we are relentlessly pursuing the suspects, who are suspected of using forged documents and their experiences as insiders, to steal aircraft cargo,” he said.

In a press release from Katz’s office was quoted Daily Mail, on the evening of 31 January 2020 Lacarriere draws on his knowledge of how consignments are picked up at the airport. He then showed him fake documents at the goods reception office about the cargo containing Prada products.

He and McArthur, assisted by two others, used a tractor-trailer to load the goods onto the truck and drive away.

According to the indictment, theft The first was worth US $ 804,000 (Rp. 11 billion) in Prada clothing and accessories.

Then on May 17, one of the suspects disguised himself as a truck driver and showed another fake document, as permission to remove goods from the same imported cargo from the first theft target.

This time Lacarriere, McArthur, a former Delta Airline employee named Davon Davis (32) and other colleagues transported an airplane cargo containing thousands of Chanel and Gucci items worth more than 5.3 million (Rp.75 billion).

Katz continued, in June the police managed to track down McArthur, Lacarriere, Davis and an unnamed colleague at a closed beauty salon in Queens. The salon is suspected of being a safe house for hoarding the luxury stolen goods.

At the salon police found more than 3,000 Gucci items including clothing and bags and other accessories, and more than 1,000 Chanel products. The total value of the goods is estimated at more than 2.5 million US dollars (Rp 35.48 billion).

According to the indictment, an unnamed broker arranged for Lacarriere and McArthur to sell a stolen Chanel bag to Alan Vu, 51.

Police reports reveal surveillance as Vu loaded items worth more than US $ 300,000 (Rp.4.25 billion) into his Mercedes SUV.

If found guilty, Lacarriere, McArthur and Davis can be sentenced to 25 years in prison. The three of them will go on trial on December 7.

Meanwhile Vu is awaiting extradition from New Jersey to Queens. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of possession of stolen property and conception.

The police are also still looking for two other suspects related to this case.

In 1978 JFK Airport became the site of a notorious theft, in which a group of armed thieves robbed US $ 5.875 million in cash and jewelery from the Lufthansa cargo terminal.

The theft case was never resolved and immortalized on film Goodfellas and The Big Heist.
