The Latvian men’s national football team will play a draw with the Faroe Islands in its field on Saturday in the UEFA Nations League D1 group.
Latvia played 1: 1 (0: 0) with the Faroe Islands.
After 59 minutes, Vladimirs Kamešs put Latvia in the lead after Vladislava Gutkovska, but already a minute after Viljornur Davidsen’s center, Gunnars Vatnhamars equalized the result from the left.
The home team earned two yellow “patches”, seeing Mārtiņš Ķigars in front of him in the 77th minute, and 11 minutes later – Daniel Ontužāns. Only one yellow card for guests – in the 58th minute for Davidsen.
The Latvian national team, led by the new captain Antonijs Chernomordis, was not able to score a victory even with four substitutions made in the second half, with two guests.
In the 61st minute, Ritvars Rugins was replaced by Aleksejs Savļjevs and Kametu was replaced by Ontužāns. Ten minutes later, Ķigurs replaced Andrejs Cigaņiks, but in the first minute of the match, Jānis Ikaunieks was replaced by Alvis Jaunzems.
It has already been reported that the Latvian national team beat San Marino 3: 0 in the test match on Tuesday, demonstrating unconvincing performance.
Defender Vladislav Sorokin had a positive Covid-19 test in the Latvian national team camp after returning from San Marino. Another national team player Vladislav Fyodorov and the team’s physiotherapist Dmitry Yefremenkov were classified as questionable as a result of the tests, who are therefore considered non-infectious at the time of the tests.
In San Marino, four specialists were left out of the full coaching corps – Marians Pahars, who was diagnosed with the disease, two who were isolated from the team for safety reasons, and one who did not join the team because his early Covid-19 tests were classified as questionable.
Meanwhile, for the Faroe Islands team, the road to Riga was shorter, because on Tuesday it played a test game in Vilnius, where it lost to Lithuania 1: 2. The match gained a wide resonance, as Hilmas Leon Jacobsen, who also played for the national handball team, made his debut for the Faroe Islands team.
Apart from defenders Sorokina and Fyodorova, midfielder Artūrs Zjuzins, who has accumulated warnings, as well as center defender / support midfielder Igors Tarasovs, who has not yet fully recovered from the injury, could not participate in this match.
The two teams competed with each other for the fifth time. First of all, in the qualification of the 2018 World Cup, Latvia lost at home with 0: 2, but the match ended in a draw 0: 0. Last year, both teams played a test match in Malaga, which ended 1: 1, but the same result was recorded in the previous team fight in the UEFA League of Nations.
The Latvian national team ranks 142nd in the FIFA rank, but the Faroe Islands are in 107th place.
Latvia will close the UEFA League of Nations tournament on Tuesday when it visits Andorra.
In September, in the first group of the UEFA Nations D League, the Latvians played 0-0 with Andorra at home and fought 1: 1 with Malta. Another draw was recorded in October in Tourshavn, where the draw was played again – 1: 1 with Faroese footballers. In the next game, Latvia conceded to Malta with 0: 1.
In the second match of the group, Malta played against Andorra on their field, winning 3: 1 (0: 1).
The guests took the lead in the third minute after Mark Rebes’s shot.
The Andorrans helped the home team to play, and Emili Garsijam put the ball into their goal in the 56th minute. In the 59th minute, the victory was scored by Jurgens Degabriele, but in the third minute of the compensation time of the match, Sean Dimečs scored 3: 1.
After five games, the Faroe Islands are leading the group with 11 points, Malta has eight points, the Latvian national team has scored four points, and Andorra has two points.
The winner of the first group of the League of Nations D will secure a place in the C league of the next season or in the third level by force. The weakest national teams play in the D league.
