RIVM reports 5,941 new positive corona tests on Saturday. This is a slight decrease compared to the day before, but above all a significant decrease compared to a week earlier: almost 12 percent. Last Saturday, the RIVM reported 6,689 positive tests.
Although the daily number of infections started to decline after the cabinet announced a partial lockdown last month, this was no longer the case halfway through this week. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the number of daily positive tests rose again.
Last Friday, the RIVM reported 6,109 new positive tests. On Thursday there were 5,651 and on Wednesday 5,417.
Because there are ‘day rates’ (one day more people can be tested than the other, so it is not surprising if the number of positive tests fluctuates from day to day) on the basis of one day, it is not possible to increase or decrease conclusions are drawn. The three-day average shows the developments somewhat more reliably:
Average number of positive tests over three days:
- Saturday: 7,304 positive tests
- Sunday: 6,982 positive tests
- Monday: 6,555 positive tests
- Tuesday: 5,700 positive tests
- Wednesday: 5,036 positive tests
- Thursday: 4,943 positive tests
- Friday: 5,259 positive tests
- Saturday: 5,900 positive tests

The number of positive tests per day is calculated by taking the average of the number of positive tests from that day and the two days before. The average for Saturday is therefore calculated together with the figures for Friday and Thursday.
However, the best conclusion about the development of the virus can be drawn by only looking at the corona figures on a weekly basis. RIVM does this every week on Tuesday afternoon and then compares the total figures of the last calendar week with those of previous weeks. In recent weeks, RIVM has seen a clear decline in this.
Number of patients in hospitals decreased again
As of Friday, 86 new deaths have also been reported. That does not mean that all of these people died in the past 24 hours. Such information is sometimes passed on with some delay.
There are now 2,125 corona patients in hospitals, 56 fewer than Friday, reports the National Coordination Center for Patient Distribution (LCPS) Saturday. 595 of them are in intensive care, 42 less than the day before.
In the past 24 hours, 163 patients have been admitted to a clinic and 32 in intensive care. 35 patients have also been moved between regions, six of whom are in intensive care.
Cause of the increase last week is still unclear
It is currently unclear what caused the number of new positive tests to increase from Wednesday to Friday. It is possible that more tests have been carried out in the past few days than in the days before, so that the number of positive results would be proportionally higher. However, it is not yet known whether this is actually the case.
The RIVM is expected to provide more clarity about the increase in the weekly update, which will be given on Tuesdays.
