The city of New York has the anti-racism motto in capital letters „Black Lives Matter “painted on the street in front of the Trump Tower in Manhattan – a clear swipe at the US President.
Mayor Bill de Blasio personally lined up on Thursday when the slogan was written in yellow on Fifth Avenue in front of the billionaire’s skyscraper.
Black Lives Matter has been the motto of protests against racism and police violence against black people in the US for years. After the death of the African American George Floyd in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis in late May, protesters across the country took to the streets under this motto.
Democrat de Blasio recently said that painting the lettering in front of the Trump Tower is not just one thing „important message to the entire nation “. It was also a message to Trump, the „has never shown respect for these three words “. The action is not just a mere lettering, de Blasio tweeted on Thursday.
Trump, who lived in Trump Tower until he won the 2016 presidential election, wrote on Twitter on July 1 that the police should not allow that „this symbol of hatred “on the „grandest street “of New York.
In the past few weeks, the President has repeatedly expressed himself negatively about the anti-racism protests and has focused on riots on the sidelines of the demonstrations.

New York is not the first US city to send a signal with the words Black Lives Matter: At the beginning of June, the mayor of the capital Washington, the Democrat Muriel Bowser, had the motto painted on a street near the White House. She also renamed the street section Black-Lives-Matter-Platz. (AFP)
