LEEUWARDEN – The number of corona infections in Friesland has fallen significantly in a week. 561 positive tests were added, a third fewer than last week’s 839. The number of people with complaints who had themselves tested remained virtually the same. Preparations for vaccination have started.

For the second week in a row, fewer people over 70 were infected, both in actual numbers and in percentages. The share is now 10 percent of the total (was at most 15 percent). In four municipalities, however, many people from this vulnerable age group are still infected: Súdwest-Fryslân (23 percent 70 years or older), Noardeast-Fryslân and Oost- en Weststellingwerf (around 20 percent).

This may be because these municipalities have quite a few nursing and care homes. In the homes, the number of infections remains a concern. Those figures are not yet falling. In the past week, 36 residents were infected. In home care, the infection rate has fallen.

Vaccine

Preparations for the vaccination against corona are now starting. GGD Fryslân has drawn up the plans for this and is preparing for a vaccination campaign. The GGD has the necessary experience with vaccination and entering into discussion about it and expects to be able to use that knowledge as soon as it is clear when the vaccination will start. It is up to the Ministry of Health and RIVM to initiate this.

View of commercial testing

The GGD is working on gaining more insight into commercial test locations and companies that test their own personnel. The less sensitive rapid tests often yield incorrect results. People are then wrongly reassured or removed from quarantine, while still being positive. The reverse also occurs. GGD Fryslân offers commercially positive people a retest. A quarter of these turned out to be negative in the past two weeks. It mainly concerned people without complaints. Commercial test sites have been contacted to point out responsibilities and obligations. For example, a registered physician must always be involved in testing.

The appeal to everyone with complaints remains to go to the four GGD test locations. These are reliable and free and there is no waiting time.

Source and contact research

The declining number of infections and the fact that people have fewer contacts than normal as a result of the partial lockdown, provide more room for source and contact research. This is important to get a closer look at the virus. The research focuses mainly on vulnerable people, employees in care and education and contact professions such as hairdressers.

Numbers

With the 561 positive tests from last week, 6,883 residents of Fryslân are now infected with the virus. This week the GGD received 6 reports of infected people who died. Last week these were 8. The official death rate related to corona is now at 99. At the GGD 4 hospital admissions were reported, last week 7. 6570 people were tested with complaints, compared to 6982 a week earlier.

Súdwest-Fryslân remains the municipality with by far the most infections, although the number is now decreasing. From 212 to 133 in the past week. Many municipalities show significant declines. There have been virtually no new reports on the Wadden Islands for over a week.

The number of new infections this week per municipality with brackets the number from last week: Súdwest-Fryslân 133 (212), Leeuwarden 73 (129), Heerenveen 58 (68), Smallingerland 48 (52), Noordeast-Fryslân 45 (42 ), De Fryske Marren 38 (79), Ooststellingwerf 36 (25), Weststellingwerf 29 (45), Waadhoeke 22 (49), Tytsjerksteradiel 20 (33), Dantumadiel 20 (19), Opsterland 18 (16), Achtkarspelen 16 (31 ), Harlingen 4 (20), Vlieland 1 (1), Ameland 0 (9), Terschelling 0 (6) and Schiermonnikoog 0 (1).
