Iceland lost the European Championship playoffs after dramatic final minutes – VG

(Hungary – Iceland 2-1) Iceland looked for a long time to secure a place in their third straight championship, but Hungary kept up with a final sprint of the rare.

Because when Dominik Szoboszlai led the field, three minutes into overtime, and fired loose via the post and in, Iceland’s European Championship hope completely burst in the final minutes.

After a huge goalkeeper mistake by Peter Gulasci after eleven minutes in the first half, Iceland took the lead on Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free kick and for a long time seemed to steer towards a new European Championship.

But after persistent Hungary pressure, they finally got the payoff when substitute Loïc Nego used the club and babb in the Iceland field to equalize three minutes before full time. The last three who came to the ball before Nego’s end all had Icelandic passports.

Jon Dadi Bödvarsson got a huge opportunity to send the Icelanders in the lead again, and the Hungarians went straight into counterattack.

And when Salzburg player Szoboszlai charged the cannon in overtime, the masterful turnaround operation was completed – to the great despair of Iceland boss Erik Hamrén.

Hungary enters what is referred to as the “death group” in the European Championships.

There they will meet the last three championship winners. Germany, which won the World Cup in 2014, Portugal, which won the European Championship in 2016, and France, which won the World Cup in 2018.

It was also dramatic in the other playoff games. Scotland took the lead over Norway’s superiors Serbia, but Serbian Luka Jovic equalized completely at the back. But in the end, Aleksandar Mitrovic missed the decisive penalty, and Scotland will go to the European Championships.

The match between Northern Ireland and Slovakia also went to extra time, but Michal Duris sent the Slovaks to the European Championships with a decisive goal in the 110th minute.

Goran Pandev previously secured Northern Macedonia’s first European Championship participation when he scored the match’s only goal against Georgia.

England, for their part, showed strength in the neighboring match against Ireland:
