The construction group was to build the new casino, but that agreement was broken in March 2019 by Mayor Jean-Marie Dedecker. According to Dedecker, the project had been tampered with under the previous city council. According to the municipality, the file “identified serious, recurring and systematic weaknesses in the implementation of the project agreement”.
Willemen Groep filed a lawsuit against the municipality and claims compensation of 8.2 million euros. The court of first instance now agrees with them. Willemen Groep did meet all the conditions of the contract. “We are relieved,” says the Willemen Group spokesperson. “We have always maintained faith in our people working on this project. We are pleased that the judge has said that we have acted as a reliable partner.”
The court now appoints a legal expert who is given 6 months to determine the amount of the compensation.
