Found in Russia, a rare pink diamond sells for Rp. 377 billion and breaks records

JENEWA, KOMPAS.com – a diamond rare pink found in Russia and sold for 26.6 million US dollars (Rp. 377 billion) on Wednesday (11/11/2020) at Sotheby’s, Geneva, Switzerland.

Dubbed ‘The Spirit of Rose‘, the stone’s selling price of 14.83 carats including the commission broke the world record for pink diamond-purple.

Reported AFPIt took just a few minutes for the top price to hit 21 million Swiss francs, after the tiny stone appeared at auction online. The identity of the winner was not revealed.

Sotheby’s auctioneer, Benoit Repellin, called the diamond a natural wonder, and added that the price of pink diamonds would soar as they became increasingly rare.

The Spirit of Rose‘is a new 27.85 carat piece discovered in 2017, by diamond mining company Alrosa in Sakha, northeastern Siberia.

It took about a year of painstaking work to cut the diamond while retaining its pink color.

Diamond pink is jewels rarest and very high value, but selling well in the world market.

The world record for pink diamonds was set in 2017 when CTF Star Pink was sold in Hong Kong for $ 71.2 million.

Five of the 10 most expensive diamonds sold were pink, said Sotheby’s, and all were sold in the last 10 years.

But this month the world’s largest pink diamond mine stopped production, due to the exhaustion of Australia’s Argyle deposits which account for more than 90 percent of global supply.
