KOMPAS.com – Sexual drive is normal and healthy.
However, at certain times you may feel it sex drive suddenly higher and passionate, then wonder if this is normal?
Several conditions can cause a person to experience an increase in sex drive, including:
1. Changes in hormone levels
Reported by Insider, hormone levels sex Estrogens, progesterone and testosterone can fluctuate during our life, even within a day.
These conditions affect the sexual urges we feel.
For women, estrogen levels increase before and during ovulation, causing an increase in sex drive.
Meanwhile, in men, high testosterone levels cause an increase in libido.
High testosterone levels are common in men and young athletes who use steroids.
A 2016 report found that taking estrogen therapy, such as for menopause or bone loss, may also increase sex drive in women.
In addition, the consumption of testosterone with low doses of estrogen therapy for postmenopausal purposes can also increase a person’s sex drive.
2. Bubbles or aging
Younger people may have higher sex drives than older adults.
In adolescent boys, for example, testosterone production increases 10-fold and the condition causes an increase in sexual desire or interest during that development period.
However, in women, those who are in middle age may have a higher sex drive than younger women.
A 2010 study of adult women found that people aged 27-45 were more likely to think about sexual activity, have more intense sexual fantasies and have more active sex lives than those aged 18-26.

3. Get more exercise
One of the reasons for a higher than normal sex drive could also be due to increased physical activity or weight loss.
A 2018 small-scale study revealed a positive association between physical fitness and higher sex drive.
The researchers found that in women, arousal was greatly influenced by cardiovascular endurance.
“Physical activity can make us feel more connected to our bodies and can improve self-image,” says sex and relationship therapist in Southern California, Kamil Lewis.
“When we feel good about ourselves, we tend to want to have sex with us more often couple.”
4. Being in a healthy sexual relationship
Some people may experience a higher sex drive if they are in a more enjoyable sexual relationship than their previous relationship.
According to OBG-YN at Serenity Women’s Health & Med Spa in Pearland, Texas, Tamika K. Cross, MD, FACOG, having good, enjoyable sex makes someone want to do it more often.
Conversely, if the experience is bad or unpleasant, then often people tend to be reluctant to have sex.
“When we feel something that feels good and satisfying, we tend to want it more,” he says.
5. Minimum stress
Your sex drive may also be higher than normal because you are less stressed.
According to Cross, higher stress levels release more of the hormone cortisol which in turn has a negative impact on a person’s sex drive.
In a small 2008 study, researchers measured the sex drive and cortisol levels of 30 women before and after watching erotic films.
They found that women who experienced decreased cortisol had higher sex drives.
“Even though sex is synonymous with physicality, it actually greatly affects a person’s mental and psychological health,” said Cross.

6. Substitution of drugs
Sudden changes in sex drive can also be caused by stopping or lowering the dose of the drugs you are taking.
Antidepressants, in particular, can have a negative impact on a person’s sex drive.
In a 2016 report, it was stated that 40 percent of people experiencing sexual dysfunction could attribute it to the use of antidepressants.
Other drugs that can block your sex drive include:
- Antihypertensive drugs, which are used to treat high blood pressure.
- Anti-manic drugs such as lithium, and
- Hormones such as Lupron or Zoladex.
Therefore, if you have recently stopped any of these medicines, it may be the cause of a higher than usual sex drive.
Some people even choose to stop or change drugs because it greatly affects their sex life.
If this is a problem for you and your partner, consider talking to your doctor.
This is because there are many safe alternatives to treatment that affect sex drive.
However, in essence, like the answer to the ideal amount of sex, no level of sex drive is considered “normal”.
According to Lewis, many people too often use the terms “sex addict” or “nymphomania” to describe someone who is thought to have a naturally high and healthy sex drive.
According to him, this is the same as humiliating those who have more sexual urges.
Finding partners who share your sex drive can be a positive way to explore your sex life.
However, if your partner has fundamentally different sex drives, that doesn’t mean you and he or she are incompatible partners.
“Even so, if high sex drive is getting in the way of your commitment to work, family or relationships, it never hurts to consult a positive sex therapist to find support on how to manage your sex drive and express it without shame,” Lewis said.
