Thousands of vulnerable elderly people have been vaccinated with the tuberculosis vaccine BCG since September in the fight against Covid-19. The 4,000 elderly are participating in a large-scale study that is being conducted in twenty participating Dutch hospitals. Corona Minister Hugo de Jonge visited the UMC Utrecht on Thursday morning to be updated by the principal investigators.

The minister sees the study as one of the promising projects in the fight against corona. One participant informed him that he did not hesitate to participate in the study. “If I can contribute in this way? And it takes me relatively little effort anyway ”, the patient motivated his considerations.

The researchers expect to be able to bring all data together before the end of the year in order to draw conclusions. They hope to be able to vaccinate at least a thousand to three thousand participants in the coming period.

Half of the subjects will receive the TB vaccine by injection, the control group will receive a placebo. A vaccination is sufficient.
