Software-update: Mozilla Thunderbird 78.4.3 – Computer – Downloads

That is indeed a big problem with this version of ThunderBird; The extension system has been overhauled again. Such as read here:
“We’ve gone from Overlay Extensions to Bootstrap Extensions to WebExtensions… and now (hopefully finally) we’re at MailExtensions.”

Moreover, the user interface is completely messed up in the new version, as you can also read in the link above.

Edit: If you still have the old TB, you can use Tools | Settings | Advanced | Updates Turn off the updates.
