At nine out of ten subcontractors of the four largest parcel deliverers in the Netherlands, things are not in order. As a result, abuses are the rule rather than the exception in the postal parcel sector, the Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate (SZW) concluded on Thursday. NRC.
Common abuses include unemployed people driving delivery vans while receiving benefits. Drivers without valid residence papers also deliver parcels and fictitious companies are used to divert money.
Over the past eighteen months, the SZW Inspectorate has investigated more than eighty courier companies and subcontractors hired by PostNL, DHL, DPD and GLS to deliver parcels.
The reason for this investigation was reports of possible wrongdoing. According to the inspection, 36 fines were imposed in 2019 and 2020. 33 cases are also still pending.
In a comment in NRC DHL says it does not recognize itself in the conclusion of the Inspectorate. A PostNL spokesperson said that the company “very recently” completed the annual inventory for the Sham Construction Act for 2019.
