No talks are underway between the two parties yet. Although the African Union and the United States, among others, have pushed for a ceasefire and dialogue.
When Prime Minister Abiy came to power in 2018, he announced sweeping reforms and made peace with neighboring Eritrea after years of war. That earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019.
Ethiopia has about 80 different ethnic populations and there is clearly still room for ethnic conflict. There have been regular riots since last summer. For example, tens to hundreds of people were killed in protests this summer.
It seems that after all the efforts and reforms, this conflict for Ethiopia again poses the threat of possible war. Abiy does not want to stop for the time being. He also sets many conditions for possible negotiations. The prime minister continues his offensive, but claims this conflict will not last long.
