The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) completed, ahead of schedule, one of the projects with the greatest impact for Latino transit users in Sunset Park.
The project improves accessibility to the station located on 59th Street and Fourth Avenue, which serves the N and R lines, and consists of three new elevators, fire and security measures.
Some users shared their impressions: “For the disabled and people who use a wheelchair, access to the subway was very uncomfortable.”
The benefit extends to parents of small children and those for whom the bicycle trip is shortened by taking the train: “It will be a great help for the babies because one needs to be getting off with the stroller”, explains a mother of a family.
According to Brooklyn Councilman Carlos Menchaca: “We need more public funds for public projects for the public benefit.”
And elected officials hope that the result of the presidential election will bring the injection of capital that the current President, despite being a New Yorker, has not provided.
“We are hopeful that with a new Biden administration one of the first things it will do is pass a legislative package that will contain trillions of dollars for infrastructure and transportation,” explained congresswoman Nydia Velázquez.
Currently, there are plans to make various stations in Brooklyn accessible via elevators.
