Samsung beat Apple for the first time in the US

JAKARTA – Samsung reportedly dominated the US smartphone market in the third quarter of this year, for the first time in three years beating its rival, Apple. Samsung accounts for 33.7 percent of the market smartphone The US in the July-September period, rose 6.7 percent from a year earlier, according to a report by market researcher Strategy Analytics, quoted by Yonhap, Tuesday.

Apple is in second place with a 30.2 percent market share, followed by another South Korean smartphone maker, LG Electronics, with a 14.7 percent market share. This is the first time since the second quarter of 2017 that Samsung has topped the US smartphone market.

Solid sales from smartphone middle-class and “pocket-friendly,” along with the launch of flagship devices, such as the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Fold 2, appear to be increasing Samsung’s presence in the US. Industry insiders say the late launch of the iPhone 12 series is likely also helping Samsung thrive in the US.

Apple usually releases new iPhones in September, but this year, the US tech giant started selling smartphone new in October. Samsung also dominates the market smartphone globally in the third quarter of this year with a share of 21.9 percent, beating Chinese tech companies Huawei with a share of 14.1 percent and Xiaomi with a share of 12.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Apple had an 11.9 percent share in the global market in the third quarter of 2020.
