Experts: Vitamin D Helps Avoid Disease When Infection With COVID-19 – Society

LONDON, November 9. / TASS /. British doctors have come to the conclusion that a deficiency of vitamin D in the human body can lead to a severe course of the disease caused by the coronavirus. This was reported by the newspaper Daily Express.

So, scientists found that in the northern hemisphere, where seasonal vitamin D deficiency is common, there were more deaths after infection with COVID-19. “The virus attacks the membrane protein ACE2, which is part of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), regulates blood pressure and is responsible for the inflammatory response,” said one member of the research team, Dr. Gareth Davis, noting that the coronavirus can deplete the ACE2 protein, causing “cytokine storm”. “This is what kills people,” he added, stressing that getting enough vitamin D can help prevent uncontrolled inflammation.

The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that everyone take 10 mcg of vitamin D between October and March, but Davis believes that nearly every adult needs 100 mcg daily to protect themselves from the effects of coronavirus infection. “We know that vitamin D reduces the risk of infection and stops the development of serious diseases in most people,” the doctor said.

In the United Kingdom, the number of infected has reached 1.1 million, more than 49 thousand have died. The authorities acknowledged that in the context of the second wave of the pandemic, the only way to prevent a sharp increase in mortality is to introduce a new quarantine. It began to operate on November 5 and should last until early December.
