Spaniard Mir registers first win of the season and strengthens MotoGP lead | NOW

Joan Mir won the Grand Prix of Europe on Sunday in the MotoGP. The Spaniard booked his first win of the season in Valencia and took a new step towards the world title.

Alex Rins was in the lead in Spain not long after the start, but after a mistake in the corner was passed by Mir, his teammate at Suzuki. The 23-year-old Spaniard no longer relinquished the first place and is the ninth different race winner this season after twelve Grands Prix.

Earlier this season, Mir finished second three times and crossed the line three times. Only at the Grand Prix of France on October 11 did the Spaniard finish outside the top five.

His closest opponent in the general classification, Frenchman Fabio Quartararo, crashed with 26 laps to go and finished fourteenth. The Spaniard Aléx Marquez did not reach the finish for the second race in a row due to a crash.

In the general classification Mir increased his lead over Quartararo to 37 points. The Spaniard Rins also has 37 points less than the leader due to his second place in the Grand Prix of Europe.

The MotoGP season has only two races left. Next week there is another Grand Prix in Valencia on the program and a week later the season will close with a race in the Portuguese Algarve. A podium place in Valencia is enough for Mir to secure the world title.
