International Data Corporation (IDC) said the Indian smartphone market recorded positive growth during the July-September quarter with smartphone shipments reaching 54.3 million units.
IDC noted that India’s smartphone market grew 17 percent over the same period in 2019.
This achievement was successful because India reopened the market after imposing a 68-day lockdown since March 25.
Xiaomi became the largest smartphone vendor in India with growth up 7 percent on an annual basis.

Xiaomi alone has a 35 percent market share in online channels. The market share of online channels hit an all-time high of 48 percent, given that many wary consumers prefer to purchase online.
According to IDC data, nearly one million units of 5G mobile phones were shipped during the July-September period, although 5G is still far from an official launch in the country’s smartphone market.
The data further states that IDC expects a gradual uptake of 5G devices by 2021 in India, and expansion into the middle class segment.
