A demonstration against the results of last month’s parliamentary elections is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. The event will take place despite the rapid increase in coronavirus infection with Covid-19 in Georgia.
Georgian opposition parties have called on the people to gather in central Tbilisi on Sunday to “protect their voice” and demand re-run parliamentary elections. The opposition believes the results of the October 31 elections have been massively counterfeited, to ensure the victory of the ruling party “Georgia’s Dream”.
Georgian authorities have denied allegations by opposition parties of falsifying votes and influencing voters.
International election observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, on the other hand, reported that the elections were far from flawless, but that fundamental freedoms were respected. Observers have identified irregularities, including re-voting and falsification of votes.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gahariya has warned that opposition street protests could spread the coronavirus. In turn, the leaders of the opposition parties have called on people not to be afraid, pointing out that the leader of the ruling party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, is more dangerous than Covid-19.
