Streaming service Spotify seems to be investigating the possibilities for a paid subscription to podcasts. According to Andrew Wallenstein, president of the Intelligence Platform of Variety. He came across a survey that the Swedish concern has put out on the matter.
It remains to be seen whether the subscription will actually materialize. Spotify mentions four subscription types in the study. With the most expensive subscription, users get access to exclusive content and podcasts can be listened to earlier. There are also no advertisements. They are available with the cheapest subscription. Prices mentioned by Spotify range from 3 to 8 dollars. It is unclear whether holders of a premium subscription must take out a podcast subscription separately or whether they will receive a discount in some way.
When asked, Spotify tells tech site The Verge that there are no concrete plans for a separate podcast service at all. A spokesperson does say that the group is constantly conducting surveys to investigate the wishes and needs of users.
Spotify has invested heavily in podcasts in recent years. The streaming service also negotiated exclusive content deals with celebrities like Joe Rogan and Michelle Obama. Kim Kardashian also delivers exclusive podcasts.
