Shortly after noon on Saturday, a spectacular traffic accident happened in the Stuiverstraat, near the municipal cemetery in Ostend.
The driver of a van lost control of the steering wheel for some unknown reason, ramming four parked cars, a few wooden posts, a lighting pole and coming to a stop on the sidewalk 100 meters further. One of the hit wagons was thrown away and hit an elderly woman who was walking on the sidewalk with her walker at the time.
“The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she is undergoing surgery. She suffered several fractures. However, she is not in danger to life, ”says chief of police Philip Caestecker of the Ostend police.
“The accident mainly caused a lot of material damage. The driver, a 43-year-old man from Oudenburg, took a negative breath test, but was positive for drugs. ”
The driver was not injured in the accident. The public prosecutor’s office immediately revoked the man’s license for 15 days. The van was hoisted and the fire brigade was asked on the spot to clean the street.
